Development news: Altoona Rail Yard Expansion

Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Mike Golat, City Administrator

As you may be aware, the Union Pacific Railroad expansion in Altoona is underway.  The expansion is necessary due to increased train traffic in the Altoona yard, largely driven by transporting frac sand.  A description of the scope of the project, supplied by Union Pacific, is provided below.  The description also includes construction information and a reveal of the project benefits.

Please be aware of the many trucks using Lake Road to haul away fill as part of the project.  Hauling is expected to last approximately 60 days and is expected to be completed by mid-September.

City and railroad officials are planning to meet to discuss noise, traffic and other impacts of the expansion project and to discuss ways those impacts may be mitigated.
